Links Member Beliefs A testimony is a reliable method to learn the truth. Men can deceive, science can be wrong but a true testimony is an undeniable way to establish the truth of the gospel. A testimony of the Book of Mormon can be gained by reading the Book of Mormon and putting the book to the test by praying about whether or not it is true: A true testimony comes from the Holy Ghost and cannot be denied.
Although the Book of Mormon does not say how exactly the Holy Ghost will manifest the truth to people, many LDS believe it is either a physical sensation such as the burning in the bosom or just an intense feeling that it is true. He also told David Nye White, senior editor of the Pennsylvania’s Pittsburg Weekly Gazette, on August 28 that speaking to Joseph Smith about revelations, “he stated that when he was in a ‘quandary,’ he asked the Lord for a revelation, and when he could not get it, he ‘followed the dictates of his own judgment, which were as good as a revelation to him; but he never gave anything to his people as revelation, unless it was a revelation, and the Lord did reveal himself to him.

I have tried for months—really tried—to find some way to hold this word up in such a way that you would be very impressed with what it means. The word is marriage. Themes[ edit ] Numerous thematic components may be found in Mormon art. These range from being only inclusive of the Mormon faith to the simple underlying theme of spirituality that a Mormon artist attempts to render in a landscape or more general subject matter. Most Mormon art is both Christian -themed and specific to the Mormon faith. Many of these LDS historical accounts depicted in art include, what Mormons believe to be, the restoration of the Gospel of Jesus in the mid th century, scenes from the life of Joseph Smith, Jr.
LDS gospel principles, values, and the teachings of the church are also important art themes, especially to the latter half of the 20th century. Although the most common themes in Mormon art are historical and principle-based, specific to the LDS faith, the decade following the founding of the church on April 6 , and continuing on through the end of second half of the 19th century, revealed little of these themes.

This pilot study explores the degree of solidarity felt between full and half siblings who are raised in a Mormon Fundamentalist polygamous community. The community under study is unique in that, at the level of official culture, it actively promotes full and half sibling solidarity through an ethos that strives to downplay genetic differences in favor of a harmonious family living together in one household. This community is an ideal cultural setting in which to examine the suitability of inclusive fitness theory for understanding the factors that promote family cohesion, sibling solidarity, and rivalry.
Our main question becomes: We found evidence for more solidarity between full siblings than between half siblings. Our data suggest that, despite the force of religious ideals, and notwithstanding the continued close physical proximity of half siblings in the polygamous family, there is a pronounced clustering of feeling and affection in the polygamous family that is consistent with inclusive fitness theory. A great fit for Girls Camp and full of activities you could use on any weeknight. Last year as I was looking across a blank calendar and wondering how in the world we were going to fill it up, a little piece of inspiration surfaced. I really wanted to create some kind of structure that would help my young women take ownership of their Wednesday activities-but I had a quiet bunch that was hesitant to throw out ideas and make plans.
I wanted to encourage the process without taking it over and making it mine. There are 19 sections total-and a few of them are harder than others to create activities around. If you can-power to you!

After introducing the topic, I plan on opening with the question, What are common questions people your age generally have about life, dating, religion, or God?
A couple of weeks ago I wrote about the growing disparity between the numbers of single Mormon men and single Mormon women. But amidst all the hand-wringing about what this means for dating and marriage, there are larger implications for what it means for Mormonism, and I had quite a few follow-up questions. So I tracked down sociologist Rick Phillips , who with Ryan Cragun has authored the forthcoming study on the sex ratio disparity among Utah Mormons.
Both scholars are past presidents of the Mormon Social Science Association. And this is especially true in Utah as compared to the rest of the nation. Conservative denominations in the United States tend to have more women than men, so the sex ratio imbalance in Mormonism is not particularly surprising, even if it is rather severe. What is surprising is the regional concentration of this imbalance. We began to investigate sex ratios in the church when we compared data from two large censuses of religious bodies, one conducted in and the other in The data show that between these two censuses, the proportion of self-identified Latter-day Saints that were female increased rather dramatically … but only in Utah.

I see the essential barrier to interfaith dating and marriage is a reticence in the Mormon faith to actively befriend and genuinely associate with people not in our religion. I believe strongly, and have felt inspired multiple times in holy settings, that God does not define us as Mormon v. I believe that our Heavenly Parents want all their children to return to them.
That method of return will be vast and varied. It simply has to be, if you consider the dimensions of history and global populations and diversity of cultures. If we widen out our concept of who we are as beloved sons and daughters of God, we can expand our own capacity to understand and love each other, across otherwise narrow religious and geographic and cultural boundaries. Boundaries that are ultimately rooted in prejudicial limitations of imagination and empathy in the natural man.

Oaks, Quorum of the 12 Apostles. Critics’ Arguments Latter-day Saints are repeatedly encouraged to rely on a witness of the spirit i. Holy Ghost to personally authenticate the truthfulness of the origins and content of the Book of Mormon. Given constant encouragement from general and local leaders of reliance on supernatural manifestations a testimony over testable claims, it is not surprising that many faithful Latter-Day Saints seem unfazed by empirical evidence or the lack of it contradicting Book of Mormon claims, whether the research is conducted by Mormon or non-Mormon archaeologists and historians.
Of even greater concern is that many faithful LDS members, by virtue of the admonition of their leaders mentioned above , are not even aware of the perplexing problems contained in the Book of Mormon text. As a result, they are usually unable to effectively dialogue with critics without resorting to faith-based claims in a testimony which carry no authoritative weight for the many dedicated experts in the fields of archaeology, history, linguistics, genetics, etc.
